Side Mirror: Lily pads and gangplanks (Part 1)

The title of this episode is Lily pads and gangplanks and I feel I ought to explain it.

It seems to me that sometimes when we are considering our next career move we adopt a perspective that I imagine may be similar to that of a frog. We are sitting on one lily pad, that is our current role and we spy another more attractive looking lily pad some way away. We decide to make a leap for it and sometimes we make it and have a good landing and sometimes we miss and land in the water. 

An alternative approach which is not open to frogs but is available to us is to use the equivalent of a gangplank to traverse more securely and predictably from our current situation to where we believe we want to be. 

We build this gangplank by expanding our current lily pad or role in the direction of our strengths until it reaches our desired destination or until we have more information about ourselves or the desired role or a mixture of both and we decide to alter our course. 

This episode is the first of two episodes that will help you to start expanding your role in the direction of your strengths and your desired next position or lily pad. I hope you find it useful.
